"Wilkinson's Workplace Literacy Services has been delivering a workplace literacy programme at SKOPE since July 2007. The programme has provided training for up to 20 staff members. Predominantly, programme participants have been speakers of English as a second language but we also have had one staff member who received numeracy support to help gain his refrigeration qualification.

We have been very impressed with the quality of the teaching provided by Wilkinson's and have found the tutors to be professional, approachable and flexible. We believe that the programme has encouraged our staff to participate more in the workplace, as well as helping them to develop better work skills. It also gives staff members an assurance of SKOPE's commitment to their ongoing development. In November 2007, in response to very high production levels, a number of classes in the programme were put on hold. Wilkinson's were quick to respond, willingly changing their schedules to accommodate SKOPE's organisational needs.

It has been an absolute pleasure working with Wilkinson's Workplace Literacy Services and we would have no hesitation recommending them to other organisations as a workplace literacy programme provider."

"Since the beginning of 2006 Pacifica Seafoods have had Wilkinson's coming on site to work with some of our staff who have English as a second language. In that time I have found the staff to have vastly improved, not only in their written and spoken English skills but their all around confidence and self esteem. The staff look forward to their twice weekly lessons, as they have such great relationships with the teachers, which of course encourages the learning process.

Wilkinson's have made it very easy for me to track my staff progress and have input on areas I would like to see developed during lessons. They have worked around the staff's ever changing hours to ensure no interruption to the running of our factory which has been greatly appreciated.

I have enjoyed working with Wilkinson's and look forward to watching them assist my staff continue to grow."

"In mid 2007, we decided to introduce a literacy and numeracy programme to enhance our training and assist with the language skills for our staff. We were provided with the assistance from the Department of Labour and Tertiary Education Commission to establish this programme, and were given a list of educational providers to select from. We were pleased to select Wilkinson's Workplace Literacy Services as our training provider. Over the last 12 months, we have received excellent service from the team at Wilkinson's, from the efficient co-ordination of the programme, (having to work around our difficult 12 hour shift structures), to the reliable and professional tuition. The tutors have worked closely with the employees on the programme and kept the Human Resources Team and the Shift Co-ordinators updated on progress. Wilkinson's also provided informative monthly reports and kept in close contact should any scheduling issues arise. To ensure we were able to provide a learning experience for as many of our staff as possible, we worked with Wilkinson's to expand the curriculum to include basic computer skills and enhanced maths and calculations. Now, 12 months down the track, we are seeing a number of positive outcomes from this, with employees displaying higher self esteem traits, individuals putting themselves forward for promotion and a very high level of employees re-applying to participate in our second year. We have appreciated Wilkinson's have worked very hard at making the process easy at our end. For these reasons, we have been happy to re-engage Wilkinson's for the second year of our programme. We endorse Wilkinson's Workplace Literacy Services as a literacy Provider, and would be happy to speak with any future industry or company looking to engage Wilkinson's for this purpose." "Prior to establishing the workplace literacy programme with Wilkinson's Workplace Literacy Services, our seven learners, all from Asiatic cultures, were very reluctant to speak to others in English in the workplace. This held them back, not only from socialising, but from learning new skills and advancing in the workplace, as the ability to communicate is essential. These individuals also struggled in their personal lives. Normal everyday activities, such as reading and understanding correspondence, were a hardship.

Within a month of beginning the programme, there was a marked change in the behaviour of the learners. Each of them made more of an attempt to speak English throughout the work day, not only with each other, but also communicating with English speaking co-workers. They also became more comfortable in asking for help, and even asking for assistance on reading company notices.

One gentleman in particular grew in self-confidence as his spoken English increased. Because of this new confidence, he was promoted into a machine setting capacity, which requires not only mechanical knowledge, but communicating and training machine operators. It has been a pleasure to see each of these individuals develop more confidence as their command of the English language grew.

Wilkinson's English Language School was great to work with, as the teacher kept us informed of lesson plans, asked for work related material, and assisted us to better support these individuals in the workplace."
